![]() ![]() This cannot continue under the fig leaf of religious liberty, which too often has been used as an excuse to deny people basic rights. ![]() We reject strongly and expressly the idea that religion should be used by government to constrain anyone’s rights. The Equality Act does nothing to hamper anyone’s exercise of their religion rather, it contributes to religious liberty by freeing LGBTQ individuals to live their lives unhampered by someone else’s ideas about religion. This cannot continue under the fig leaf of religious liberty, which too often has. While recent decades have brought significant advances toward equality, they remain a patchwork of local and state laws and court rulings. FigLeaf Boutique at Community Hospital East continues to offer all services, including maternity and cancer care. LGBTQ people will still face the threats of harassment and discrimination in more than half the states in the nation. It is particularly important for us as Jewish leaders to affirm our strong support for the Equality Act. Extending the protections of the Civil Rights Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity is an essential step towards making this “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We know too well the slippery slope a society stands on when any segment of the population is granted only second-class rights or forced to rely on the good will of the party in power. Our eyes, and our children’s eyes, are watching. ![]()
